The 22-year-old man — named Wilbert de Jesus Cordero — was crossing the street at an intersection in the Bronx when two cars going in opposite directions hit him at around 4 a.m. Sunday, the NYPD said in a statement to PEOPLE.
A 24-year-old male was driving a Mercedes Benz going southbound on White Plains Road when it hit Cordero, pushing him into the northbound lanes, police said. Then, a 25-year-old male, who was driving northbound in a BMW, allegedly hit Cordero again, according to police.

The unidentified driver of the Mercedes stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. No charges have been filed against him as of Tuesday afternoon.
The driver of the BMW was identified as Adam Vilajeti, police said. He allegedly fled the scene and was found three hours later. He is being charged with leaving the scene of an accident, Operating a Vehicle BAC .08 of 1% and driving while intoxicated.

Cordero had been working at Martin Aponte’s store,WNBCreported. Aponte told the outlet Cordero was from the Dominican Republic and had only recently moved to New York.
“Last night, he was in the barber shop and he was going home,” Aponte said. “Maybe he didn’t take care when crossing the street.”
The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the incident.
