On Wednesday, a 30-year-old woman was pushed into a moving E southbound subway train at the 53rd Street/Fifth Avenue station platform around 12 p.m. before heading either to or from her job, an NYPD spokesperson told PEOPLE.
Michael Kemper, NYPD’s chief of transit, said at a Wednesday news conference that the unidentified woman was in critical condition at Cornell Medical Center.
“As the train was pulling out of the station,” said Kemper, “she was pushed, causing her head to strike the moving train. The train departed the station, and then she fell onto the roadbed, onto the tracks. Fortunately, there were eyewitnesses, and good Samaritans that were on that platform that helped her up back off the roadbed onto the platform.”

Wednesday’s subway pushing incident has unnerved commuters, with Carress Brown tellingCBS New York: “It’s scary. Every time I hear something like that happens, it just makes me think about it twice.”
“Definitely invokes anxiety, so it’s not something that makes you comfortable,” Yoonsuk Han told the same outlet. “Just one of those things where you just have to be extra cautious.”
The NYPD told PEOPLE Friday morning that there have been no new updates surrounding Jones' arrest.
