The Detroit - based carmaker revealed details of the incident in a breachdisclosurefiled with the California Attorney General ’s Office on May 16 . The revealing explains that malicious login action was find on an unspecified telephone number of GM online substance abuser account between April 11 and 29 . Further probe revealed that the caller had been hit with a credential stuffing attack , which saw hackers pass through exploiter business relationship to stealcustomer reward points , which they then redeemed for gift posting . Credential stuffingis a rudimentary case of cyberattack that involves using lists of previously compromised login certification to hack into on-line history . Such listscan be purchasedwith relative ease on the dark web .
