Futuramareturns toits young home on HuluMonday , July 29 , with a 10 - episode time of year thatwill please rooter both old and new . There aretwo more seasonson the way , with hopefully more to fall out — and the mold and gang was at San Diego Comic - Con to fete the show that save getting canceled and then finding its way back .
Executive producer David X. Cohen andClaudia Katz — who agreed they’dloveto do an actual big - screenFuturamafeature film one Clarence Shepard Day Jr. — speak to a SDCC insistence roundtable about the show ahead of its time of year 12 premiere . io9 got a chance to ask a question we ’ve often wondered : Futuramahas been around , on and off the air , for 25 twelvemonth . Is there someone among the seasoned work party who ’s sort of designate as the keeper of the lore , to make certain all the continuity lines up ?
“ It depends on which aspect you ’re face at , ” Cohen said . “ Because [ animation studio ] Rough Draft has all the graphics going back perpetually . And like every 10 years when we get renew , they have to redraw everything at a higher result because the television has more scan lines [ express joy ] . ”

Katz chimed in . “ We have now animate our title sequence in 3D , I think three time ; this last time was in 4 K , and they had to refashion everything . It ’s funny because I was showing it to David and we were interpret things that we ’d never note before , because it was in 4K. We were like , ‘ What is that ? Did you put that in there ? ’ ‘ No , that ’s always been there . ’ ‘ Oh , cool , ' ” she said .
Cohen continued . “ One of the other thing I will say that allows the show to come back again and again is there ’s been a lot of persistence behind the scene . Many of the same animators and producers at Rough Draft Studios , for example , our integral vocalisation stamp has stayed with the show throughout , which has been super decisive and a little routine lucky statistically , probably . And then , even the writers , even now , the writing stave is at least one-half writer [ who ] have been there on and off for 20 - plus days , and [ we also ] have newer mass who came to the show as fans . ”
Added Katz , “ And it ’s the same on the art side — like you have your kind of loyalist and then your sort of fresh [ gift ] . ”

Cohen then had a closed book to deal about how the show ’s writer manage to keep all thatFuturamalore full-strength . “ The embarrassing admission that I ’m about to make is that in the writers room , we are often consulting these rooter site to see what happened in the old episodes . Even those of us who wrote the episodes . I ’ve been to , like , fanFuturamatrivia nighttime , for example , and came in 2d . It ’s grueling to contend with fans for the repository of knowledge . ”
And , of trend , “ Sometimes , we just blank out stuff and nonsense too . Like , there ’s an animation fault — you do n’t want to fault the energizer because everybody forgot , ” he read . “ The writer did n’t say anything about it . But Leela ’s dad , his mouthpiece used to open side to side but now it opens [ up and down ] . But then it ’s go to go back to [ the first way ] . The thing is , he ’s get very flexible jaws ! So in some sense , some things do fall through the cracks of time . ”
Futuramaseason 12 kicks off July 29 on Hulu .
