Today at Oculus Connect 6 , Facebook ’s annual event that does its best to convince the world why VR is still a matter , thecompany announced Horizon , a giant practical realism playground where users can ramp up their own domain , create and wager games , or just socialise with friends who are represented by legless liven avatars .

It sounds like Facebook and Oculus draw a set of inspiration from Spielberg ’s and Ernest Cline ’s Ready Player One , but Horizon is less about photograph - realism with a side of uncanny valley , and more like a practical animated cartoon cosmos that inspires player to repurpose their Minecraft skills . Facebook did n’t specify if user would be able to bear down others to hop into a Telepod to visit their custom worlds , but you may take over that down the road the company will find a way to monetise the experience as the number of humankind and games finally grows .
While the project sounds ambitious and there ’s no tattle whether the public will see this as a sea wolf app or just another VR projection to ignore , one thing is sure : The Horizon avatar have no legs and that ’s just eldritch .

Horizon will found sometime in 2020 , and users with Oculus Quest or Oculus Rift hardware can requestearly access to the beta here . Everyone else will have to wait until sometime next year , but it seems like Facebook is finally pushing all of its eye user to Horizon as come October 25 both the Facebook Space and Oculus Rooms VR social networks are being shut down .
