When she rifle to the infirmary , they removed a dozen “ small , blank mandril - shaped , hemipterous insect - similar being stuck in the mucous tissue layer of the tongue , cheek , and gingiva . ”
Yes , the dead calamari ’s spermatophores were still fighting , and they ’d inseminate the woman ’s mouth .

Each spermatophore include an ejaculatory setup , which can expel the sperm wad quite forcefully , and a cementum body for bond . Of course , neither of those is a acerate leaf or a knife — the kind of affair you ’d look to need for genuine implantation ( into either a distaff squid or a human sass ) . I ’ve written a bit about this enigma before . As it turns out , no one is quite sure how spermatophores engraft themselves into skin .
But whatever the details , it ’s happened to humans more than once . An earlier case field reports “ spermatozoon stings ” from consumption of rude squid , but the recent Journal of Parasitology paper is the first report I ’ve see of spermatophore bodily function in a cooked squid ( parboil , to be specific ) . But do n’t worry — Staaf notes that Western squid preparations typically remove the internal organs from calamari and leave only the muscleman — so you ’re not in any peril of accidentally ingest spermatophores .
