Are you sure major planet - hopping SF is optimistic ? I receive a lot of it escapist and authentically desperate . I ’m thinking of commercial-grade SF , say movie like drop off in Space , where a demolish environs is simply the spur track to get us hopping across champion organization in hunt of a beautiful new major planet . To me that ’s a counsel of desperation . We ’ll put down this planet , it seems to say , so we need to discover a nice new one .
An optimist , at least this optimist , feel that reducing carbon yield and rule ways to adhere it are just the kind of problem that human beings are sound at solving . We can and we will strike a equalizer with the rest of this planet . How good we are at it will determine how many of us will pop off and how much of our culture we get to take with us .
But most science - fiction fans are often the greenest people around . They all drive hybrids !

Of course it ’s too soon . But it ’s right smart too belatedly not to recognise that we may not get very far into the galax . That will limit the number of world - the like within range .
