Wilhelm Karl Grimm bounces back from last week ’s mess with a solid narrative of Rumpelstiltskin , odd MMO video secret plan , and a deadly game of … Sudoku ?
Let me totally honorable — as soon as I visualise the video recording game panorama of this installment , I was upset . Traditionally , primetime TV web dramas do not realize TV games , gamers or nerds , exploiting them for tacky jest ( you’re able to see the worst offenders here ) . So I was pleased to Spinner , the video biz company lionise the upcoming release of their MMO Black Forest 2 : Lost in the Woods , was staffed by a wide variety of hoi polloi — both age and gender — and they were all able to function in canonic human companionship , too .
Of naturally , it ’s not all fun and games at Spinner — two programmers name Brody and Jenna endeavor to have fun , almost have sexual activity in an office staff before Jenna gets cold feet and leaves . Then Brody is tailor in one-half by a goblin - like Wesen with two heavy , battery-acid - barf off-white claws coming out his paw . Although this Wesen does write “ PLAY MY plot ” in Brody ’s blood on the walls , so there is a find of biz … just a deathly one .

So the Wesen - o’the - week case ends up being a good time . Nick investigates Jenna ’s x - boyfriend ( and his baby , both of whom satisfy the nerd trope but still act like reasonable humans without mental disorders ) . He ’s barren — he was play - testing the game — but he bring out that Brody ’s avatar was down — sliced in one-half — three minute before his real eubstance was slice in half by a participant call NAMELESS .
Meanwhile , the killer is leaving hint — the three title pages from Alice ’s Adventures in Wonderland , A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur ’s Court , and Rage by Richard Bachmann , with “ What ’s My Name ” scrawled on them . Then he allow for a Sudoku puzzle with some numbers highlight on at the scene of his next execution , another of Black Forest 2 ’s chief programmers — hilariously , only Wu recognizes what it is , because he ’s the only person who has looked at a paper or an in - flight magazine , apparently .
really , Wu is the individual who figures all of it out : the Sudoku number is a date , the affair the book have in common are that the authors apply pseudonyms a.k.a . a “ no de plumage , ” and , after Jenna suddenly remember an IT guy she called late one dark to fix her computer , who made her hope to go out with a engagement with him in telephone exchange at a eating place called Nom de Plume on that date , but she stood him up . And , when everyone realise it ’s a picayune extreme to go on a execution spree just because a girl you coerced into going on a particular date did n’t show up , it ’s Wu who figure out the IT guy must have helped write the special code that makes Black Forest 2 so special that Jenna ’s been taking mention for ( this computer code allows “ hundred of players ” to player in the same locating , which sound like a server , which in real - life can host thousands of players at a fourth dimension , so I have no idea what the piece of tail is happening here ) .

Unfortunately , Jenna ca n’t call back this guy ’s name , the computer ship’s company does n’t have any information on Nameless ( although they have all the substantial names of the player , they just ca n’t tally them to their game characters , somehow , and the IT company that use him also somehow does n’t recognize his name ( it ’s … a footling goofy ) . Nick and Hank are force to go to the trailer to do some enquiry where they discover the orca is in fact a Fuchsteufelwild , which is a goblin - looking Wesen with two big , Lucy in the sky with diamonds - spewing bone claws coming out his hands , as previously take note .
The trailer treasure treasure trove also give a list of names of Fuchsteufelwild , whose names all seem to be anagrams of each other . Then , all it takes is a little host searching to find out a Black Forest instrumentalist ’s name that apply all the same letter . Meanwhile , Jenna has used her biz avatar to hunt down Nameless , and toss off his persona idle . The Fuchsteufelwild is not a polite loser ; He runs off to kill Jenna , but Nick and bunch are already there ( his name , it turns out , was Trinket Lipslums ) . The Fuchsteufelwild still manage to escape to the cap , where he then jumps off to his expiry rather than be catch .
The stand - alone account had some goofy moments , but it was n’t near as ludicrous as last week ’s episode , and it was well paced , too . But even better , we got some more drift on the overarching stories that also happened to be much better desegregate into the main story than last week , too .

Juliette is still seeing ghosts — who are emphatically Nick — and expect for Monroe and Rosalee ’s help in see out what is going on . It does n’t take Monroe ’s long to pull in these are indeed Juliette ’s storage , with one fussy being at the trailer , where Nick attempt to tell her about his Grimm business in the first season finis . She wants to go back to the trailer , in promise of convey her memory back . Monroe , obviously , is bear on and want to peach to Nick first , but Juliette say if she does n’t get to go the lagger she ’ll forget Nick completely . I whole take this was just a Grimm / magic / issue , that Juliette feel that she involve to get all her store back because she venerate she might leave Nick again — but no , it ’s that Juliette ca n’t get all her retentivity , she ’s going to provide Portland and this mess behind her , as Monroe reveals to Nick at the very end .
This is slap-up , for several reason ( it ’s also very elusive , which I discourse in the Assorted Musings ” below ): 1 ) it makes Juliette an incredibly strong character , one who is tired of this shit and is unforced to just walk away — it strengthens the character and provides drama . 2 ) it provides some serious conflict for Nick , who has seemed adamantine about not reveal his Wilhelm Grimm - ness to Juliette , since it run out so poorly the first clock time . 3 ) It establish that Grimm does have existent layers , because what seemed for all the domain like another unearthly job conveniently because of magic trick / go / whatever is , it ’s Juliette laying down the fucking practice of law .
If that were all , I ’d still give this instalment of Grimm high marks , but it also let on something on the Renard / Royal / seriously overarch plot of the Royal families trying to destruct the Wesen democracy and bring back imperial rule . He secretly cope with with an associate from Vienna , who tells him no one knows who ’s in commission , no one believe some guy visit Meisner ( ? ) , and gives him a USB effort with the names of everyone involved in the recent coup ( was this part of the first season , or is this the first sentence it ’s been note ? Sorry , I really will sample to bewitch up on the first season soon ) . And someone — very likely send off by Renard ’s brother — attempt to blow up Renard and his associate up with a briefcase bomb , which Renard spot and tosses into the street before shooting the perpetrator . It ’s pretty badass .

So I say Grimm was firing on all cylinder this episode . A solid A - tarradiddle , front on the overarching plots , not too much hokum , very well - delete together , fantabulous tempo , some real movement for a few characters and some serious consequence — hell , now I get laid the more stand - alone Wilhelm Karl Grimm episodes can be this solid , I ’m going to have to lead off grading elusive .
Assorted Musings :
• Anyone who did n’t figure out that “ Trinket Lipslums ” is also an anagram for Rumpelstiltskin within 60 second gear of the Fuchsteufelwild ’s appearing in the book , please sit in the corner for 10 minutes as punishment . NO TALKING .

• You all can have your Monroe , because I ’m 100 % Team Wu . Dude is awe-inspiring . Totally surefooted in himself , cool with whatever his partners do , solve the tough puzzle Nick ca n’t wrap his somewhat niggling head around , and has a Arabian tea . I go for he conjoin the bunch , if only so I can observe him be altogether lackadaisical about fay taradiddle demon murdering hoi polloi .
• I have a go at it how hopeful Nick , Hank and Renard were about the murderer being a even psychotic human and not a Wesen , and yet how all pessimistic they were .
• If there ’s a point to Blood Forest 2 other than stamp out your fellow players , I have no musical theme what it is .

• Although Wu does figure out the guy must be angrier about getting chicane out of the Black Forest 2 money , the Fuchsteufelwild in reality seems far more worried about the date , since he screams “ She break her promise ! ” when chuck himself off the ceiling .
• The most farcical part of this installment was , without any dubiousness , how the Fuchsteufelwild somehow was an independent contractor for an IT company , where no one really knew his name . How is that even possible ? Who the hell did they sign his hitch to ? You still postulate a name for direct deposit .
• My favorite anagram of “ Trinket Lipslums , ” as per Wu ’s anagram search screen : “ Tinkle Slim Spurt . ”

• Even better , when the computer fellowship is start the search for players names , it register they have like two dozen players whose figure set about with “ Tinkle , ” which is hilarious even before you remember the game still has n’t been resign yet .
• I type the name “ Fuchsteufelwild ” once and then copied and glue it throughout this review , because I do not detest myself .
• So one real billet : the matter I substantiate about Grimm tonight is that it might be too cagey for its own good . It ’s on NBC , so it ’s — I do n’t want to say dumbing itself down — but it ’s trying to keep itself basic for appeal to as mainstream an audience as possible , which intend we get matter like “ What is a Sudoku ? ” for those Farmer in Nebraska who only wrick on the TV after the harvest is in or something . But we — or at least I — get going to assume the show is trying to work entirely on this stage , so when Juliette says thing like “ I ’ll totally forget Nick if I do n’t go to the trailer ! ” I assume that this is a double-dyed instruction of fact … and not an factual threat . The show clarified this at the closing , but I was 100 % sure it was just a silly contrivance before that . Do you see the job ? When the show works so hard to be so altogether accessible , these moments where it tries to do something really saucy and cool end up being perplexing , because it seems impossible that a show that assumes people do n’t know what a Sudoku puzzle is could perhaps have the faith in its audience to know that there ’s layer in Juliette ’s ultimatum .

• I think there are a lot more scenes like this , where the writers are doing something pernicious and sassy , and they either fly over our read/write head because we ca n’t reckon the show being that clever , and , unlike Juliette ’s thing , never get clarified . Just a thought .
