There ’s suddenly a tempest of outburts about a week - sometime interview that George Lucas had with Charlie Rose . It ’s the one where he compared selling Lucasfilm to Disney as sell his children to “ white slavers . ” This was a stupid matter to say , but not really a new note for Lucas to run into .
There ’s been tension in the relationship between Lucas , Disney , and Star warfare almost since the beginning . Lucas had treatments for instalment VII - IX , but deny to show them to anyone at Disney . Lucas toldBloomberg :
Ultimately you have to say , “ Look , I get laid what I ’m doing . Buying my floor is part of what the peck is . ” I ’ve exercise at this for 40 yr , and I ’ve been pretty successful . I intend , I could have said , “ hunky-dory , well , I ’ll just sell the fellowship to somebody else . ”
Once Disney and Lucas had form out the shape of the deal which would trade Lucasfilm to Disney , he allowed exactly three executives at Disney to see the treatments . Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger was diplomatical about the stories , saying , “ We thought from a storytelling perspective they had a lot of voltage . ”
For a while , word had it that Lucas was going to be consulting on The Force Awakens . His Logos , Jett Lucas , saidback in 2013that Lucas created a set of guidelines for the sequels and was “ always speak ” with J.J. Abrams . But then , according to Lucas , Disney “ decide they did n’t like ” his plots for the new trilogy , and he walked away .
Which was totally all right with Lucas . He was n’t upset at all ! At least , that ’s what he said in January of 2015 , tellingScreenRantthat he was aroused to know nothing about Episode VII :
I have n’t realise anything ; I mean I saw the drone , it expect great , it looks interesting . But as I ’ve said before : one thing I regret about Star Wars is that I never got to see it , you make love ? I never got to be blown away by the big ship coming over the matter , or anything . But this meter I ’m cash in one’s chips to be , because I have no estimate what they ’re doing .
That was affirmative and skillful George , who fade aside the nearer The Force Awakens got to actually being released .
In aVanity Fairinterview put out on November 18 , Lucas give his reason for stepping away as “ You go to make a movie and all you do is get criticized . And it ’s not much fun . You ca n’t experiment . ” He already seemed implicated that someone else just would n’t “ get ” Star Wars , adding that there was more to it “ than just spaceship . ”
He ’d repeat that personal line of credit in the consultation with Charlie Rose , part of which ( although not the “ white slaver ” bit)airedonCBS This Morningon November 19 :
The issue was , at long last , they await at the account and they pronounce , “ We desire to make something for the fans . ” So , I said all I want to do was distinguish a story about what happened .
It ’s called blank opera house , but people do n’t in reality realize it ’s actually a scoop opera and it ’s all about family trouble — it ’s not about spaceships . So they decided they did n’t want to apply those history , they determine they were go to do their own thing so I decide , “ mulct … . I ’ll go my path and I let them go their way . ”
Lucas seems under the apprehension that bring in a picture show fans would love necessarily means that it was n’t going to tell the narration .
In addition to the jab about starship and sports fan , Lucas ’ other motif was to compare it all to a divorcement , saying later in that same Rose interview :
When you give out up with somebody , the first rule is no phone call . The 2d formula , you do n’t go over to their house and drive by to see what they ’re doing . The third one is you do n’t show up at their coffee store and say you are fit to burn it . . . You just say “ Nope , bygone , history , I ’m moving forward . ”
In another interview , this timepublished inThe Washington Poston December 5 , Lucas said that you either have utter restraint or you do n’t , and expect over J.J. Abrams ’ shoulder was going to make them all miserable . “ So I said ‘ I ’m going to get divorced , ’ ” Lucas explained .
He then extended the metaphor in a queer way :
“ Now I ’m face with this clumsy realness , which is okay , ” Lucas says . extend the metaphor , he says it ’s like when a grown child gets splice . “ I aim ta go to the wedding . My x will be there , my new married woman will be there , but I ’m going to have to take a very bass breathing place and be a good person and sit through it and just bask the moment , because it is what it is and it ’s a witting decision that I made . ”
Which all sound very much like Lucas was regret the whole effort , but had no selection but to endeavor to savor it now . Or , at least , not ruin it for everyone .
Once he had actually seen The Force Awakens , Lucas get by a very backhanded compliment , telling Vultureat the Kennedy Center Honors Gala on December 6 , “ I retrieve the sports fan are go to know it . It ’s very much the kind of movie they ’ve been wait for . ”
Given that Lucas has n’t been a sports fan of lover chemical reaction in a long time , it ’s hard to take that as a good matter . And note that he did n’t actually say that he like it .
And so we come back to the to the Charlie Rose interview that aired , in full , on Christmas Eve . The short version from CBS This Morning was focused on how and why Lucas backed away from Star Wars . The long version includes much more of Lucas maintain his visual sensation over Disney ’s . Lucas says that Disney “ want to do a retro motion-picture show . I do n’t like that . ” And then talked about how he was always introduce in Star Wars , “ I operate very hard to make them totally dissimilar , with different planets , with different spaceships . You know , to make it unexampled . ”
Which brings us back to the comparison that everyone ’s noticing now :
Lucas : These are my kid .
uprise : All those Star Wars films .
Lucas : All the Star Wars films .
Rose : They were your tyke ?
Lucas : Well , they are . I bed them , I create them . I ’m very nearly involved in them . And , obviously , to deal them off —
Rose : And you sold them .
Lucas : I sell them off to the the lily-white slavers who take these things and … [laughs ]
How incredibly nauseous . Yes , selling your plastic film and yield society for four billion dollars — particularly when you already had buttloads of money — and then not liking what the novel owners do is precisely like being force to sell your children into slavery .
Besides the deep unintelligent mode he phrased it , this seems like the most honest description of his belief George Lucas has ever given . Until this moment , every other quote has been passive strong-growing about fans and Disney and the film . He ’s insisted that he has made the conclusion to move on and put it all behind him . He even secern Rose , “ It ’s like talking about your divorce or something . It ’s just unenviable , but it ’s not afflictive . ”
That ’s not really how it seems . It seems like , with the comparisons to a divorce and children and , you sleep with , slavers , Lucas does find it all afflictive . And he ’s grown more pissed about it over clip , not less . In a weird means , masses like Disney ’s Star Wars is the bad potential outcome for him .
No one ’s ever made the casing for a gargantuan corporation taking over for the original creative person as well as George Lucas . Which credibly is n’t what anyone had in mind .
Update : Lucas has now apologized for the “ white slaveholder ” thing andsaid some very dainty thing about Disney .
