It seems that the first US patent of invention for an internal - burning powered ‘ Pogo ’ control stick was issued to inventorR.J. Maysback in 1950 .
The jumping machine was intended to be given on gasolene , and , according its Divine was “ … extremely effective and amusing in operation . ” It ’s not completely clear whether May ’s power - stick ever run into yield , buta similar(ish ) equipment , which was granted a US letters patent ten years later , did . According its inventor Mr. G. “ I would test it each time he tinkered with it . It ran on butane , but really jump high up when we once used a motley of acetylene and O ! He used a good example ‘ A ’ Ford Muriel Spark roll which deliver quite a few volts to the unprotected spark plug – as I once find out when my zip came in contact with it briefly . I have n’t had a rush like that since ! ”

Sadly , the high - jumping ‘ Hop Rod ’ was eventually withdraw from commercial yield due to safety headache .
Nonetheless , despite possible doubts regarding safety issues , research and development of other choice for powered - pogo - stick has not stopped – work has progressed at at least three university .
