I do n’t have that much to say about this retiring Friday ’s 12 scamp — it ’s a lot of readiness - up , and Cole and Cassandra both spend the whole episode spinning their wheels . But it does place up the show ’s first ever conflict between changing the past tense and actually building a plausible futurity . Spoilers ahead …
So like I said , neither Cole nor Cassandra has much to do this week . Cole basically spend the whole episode bury in the wreckage of Wexler ’s chemical compound , only to emerge and find that it ’s 2017 , not 2015 , and the plague has struck after all . Cassandra , meanwhile , goes to Chechnya to wait for Cole — hoping she wo n’t find him , because that ’ll mean they succeeded . ( And because Cole is zapped forward 2 years , she ’s gull into thinking they did . )
But the meat of the installment has to do with event in 2043 , where we come across Project Spearhead , the organization that Dr Jones and Whitley left behind to get their time - change of location research . And while the Splinter project is all about taste to deposit the past , Spearhead is all propose at construct a potential future — they have a gross ton of electronic computer servers , trying to add up up with a vaccinum that can anticipate any possible mutation of the virus before it happen . And then , the human race can finally be dependable , and not have to live in fright of next mutation .

Unfortunately , the power core of the clock time auto is burnt out , so Dr. Jones demand the Spearhead nucleus . So there ’s only one core , and two possible uses for it : sentence travelling , or vaccinum development . The past times , or the future tense . Dr. Jones makes a strong argumentation that time travel is the respectable path , because they can bring back all the people they lost , and fix human culture . But Foster , the psyche of Spearhead , think that ’s a pipe dream .
There are vague hints that Foster is kind of a dictator — he spouts spiritual lingo a mass , and seems to have built the kind of “ perfect community of interests ” that generally signify fascism in a post - apocalyptic circumstance . Plus we hear that when some of the military leaders tried to abandon Spearhead to go to a more distant place setting and stop research for a cure to the virus , Foster had them executed and it was kind of a bloodletting .
Jones claims that Foster ’s project has only cured an old mutation of the computer virus , from 2033 , and they ’ll never be capable to cure all the current and future strains — but it ’s surd to tell if that ’s really true .

Foster does make Jones a somewhat reasonable go — he ’ll lend her his power substance long enough for Jones to retrieve Cole from the yesteryear , but then she has to go influence for him . But she reckon that as “ servitude , ” and decides instead she ’s just going to take his magnate core — by any way necessary . One potential obstacle : Whitley ’s dad , an high-strung military man , is head of security measures at Spearhead .
In the remainder , it fare down to two Thomas Kyd : Jones ’ girl Hannah , who died in the pestis and could be restore to life if Jones can change the timeline . And Ramse ’s boy , that Ramse meet for the first time at Spearhead , who ’s living there with Ramse ’s X - girlfriend Elena . One fry represents a lost past , the other be a future that could jump up here and now , with no revision of history necessary .
I ’ve actually already regard the rest of the first time of year of 12 Monkeys , because Syfy sent out screener of the whole shebang . And so I cognize how this all turns out . Without disclose any spoiler , do to say that we ’re tread into murkier soil from here on out .

The show is about to get even dark — although , woefully , there are also some parts of the last episodes where I felt as though the show is starting prostration under its own weight . ( Much the same way Continuum begin to . ) Some of the plot twists felt rushed and a bit out of left field of operations .
The well newsworthiness is , these motif about the nature and ethics of fourth dimension travelling , as seen in this latest instalment , keep getting get with an admirable persistence . And the character studies of Cole , Cassandra and Jones continue to get developed in a fascinating way . All in all , strap yourselves in because the timelines are about to get jolly insane .
