It ’s the little moments of theatrical role - building and insight that make George R.R. Martin ’s A Game of Thrones such a spellbinding book . And there ’s no way that HBO can make every incident set into a ten - episode miniseries . But here ’s hope .
With its huge cast of reference and its tangle of complicated intrigues , the first Quran of A Song of Ice and Fire is habit-forming recitation — but it ’ll also be challenge to convert into a television receiver serial . We ’re sure the telly version will cover the major incidents — but here are 10 trivial moments from the book we trust make it onto boob tube .
Spoilers ahead for anyone who has n’t read the book …
1 ) The bannermen attempt to test Robb .
After Catelyn Stark goes South and get out her son Robb in armorial bearing in Winterfell , some of his bannermen start trying to prove his authority . One of them , Greatjon Umber , in reality insults Robb , menace to leave and run his brand . But then Robb ’s direwolf , Grey Wind , attacks Greatjon and bites off two of his fingers . After that , Greatjon is Robb ’s most fervent jockstrap and the first individual to exalt Robb the King in the North .
2 ) Arya catches pigeons and trades them for soup

3 ) All of the great Jon / Tyrion moments
The union of Jon Snow , the whoreson , and Tyrion Lannister , the Imp , is one of the great surprises of the first book . They share so many greatexchanges , like when Jon state “ I do n’t eff who my female parent was , ” and Tyrion reply , “ Some charwoman , no doubt . Most of them are . ” And when Tyrion gives Jon advice on how to deal with being an outcast with no position : “ Never block who you are , for sure enough the man wo n’t . Make it your strength . Then it can never be your impuissance . ”
4 ) The whole Petyr / Cate / Brandon erotic love triangle
Petyr “ Littlefinger ” Baelish turns out to be a very untrustworthy ally for Ned Stark — as Petyr warn himself in one of his moment of wry body fluid . But you wo n’t get the full backstory of why Petyr has no great love for Eddard unless you know all about Petyr ’s fate dear for Ned ’s married woman Catelyn , which led him to challenge Ned ’s brother Brandon for her hand .
5 ) Viserys torment his sister
When you ’re read the book , Daenerys ’ humiliation at the hands of her retard chum Viserys experience endless and horrifying , and you do to execrate the unseasoned prince in exile . But really , there are just a few incident where Viserys abuses his sister , include a couple of filthy fierce outbursts and his double warning not to “ fire up the dragon . ” It would be easy to seethe this hooey down to just one or two scenes — but really , we need to see Viserys ’ full arrogance and mistreatment of Daenerys , so we can celebrate when she in conclusion takes him down a pegleg or two .
6 ) Bran and Rickon visit the graves of the Starks
Before the masses at Winterfell even hear the news program that Ned has been executed , there are plenty of prognostication , include Bran ’s dreams and the doings of the direwolves . It all comes to a drumhead when Bran and Rickon go down to the tombs with Osha and Maester Luwin , and the Maester render them the statue of the past Starks , from Jon Stark all the way of life down to Lord Rickard . It ’s a spooky , fateful moment that also teaches us just how rich the heritage of House Stark is .
7 ) Tyrion and the Clansmen
Just when you guess that Tyrion ca n’t have any more off-the-wall / hilarious team - ups after Jon Snow and Bronn the sellsword , he joins forces with a group of brutal mountain clan member , including Shagga , Chella and Ulf . They ’re huge animal with a thirstiness for battle . Shagga loves goats , expect like Casterly Rock with hair , and is constantly jeopardise to cut off Tyrion ’s manhood and feed it to the goats . Timett son of Timett stabbed out his own middle when he gain maturity . They ’re comically , deadly barbaric , and a gravid enhancer for Tyrion ’s signified of caustic remark . Let ’s hope we get passel and lot of Shagga peril violence to the manhood of his foes .

Our sympathies are entirely with “ Lord Snow ” as he thrashes the bullies and “ rapers ” among the trainees of the Night ’s Watch in the training railway yard . Until he gets taken aside by the Lord Armorer of the Night ’s Watch , who learn him an important moral :
Four that you ’ve humiliated in the yard . Four who are probably afraid of you . I ’ve watched you fight back . It ’s not training with you . Put a good bound on your steel , and they ’d be dead heart and soul ; you love it , I know it , they know it . You leave them nothing . You shame them . Does that make you proud ? … Now conceive on this , boy . None of these others have ever had a master - at - arm until Ser Alliser . Their fathers were farmers and wagonmen and poachers , smiths and miners and oars on a trading galley . What they know of fighting they learned between decks , in the alleys of Oldtown and Lannisport , in wayside brothels and tavern on the kingsroad . They may have tattle a few joint together before they arrive here , but I promise you , not one in twenty was ever robust enough to own a literal blade . So how do you care the taste of your victory now , Lord Snow ?
And in that moment , Jon starts to get up and become a real member of the Watch .
9 ) Ned is too honorable for his own trade good .
It ’s hard to believe how many chances Eddard Stark is pop the question to do the smart thing rather than the right affair , and he turns them all down . His last days are full of ethical mistakes — he warns Cersei rather than get her by surprisal . And then he turns down Renly ’s 100 steel , and the chance to strike before the Lannisters can gear up . He also turns down Littlefinger ’s offer of an alliance to decree through Prince Joffrey . He rejects the path of cunning and scheme not once , but several time , before he finally dooms himself . Let ’s hope we get to see the full forward motion of Ned ’s self - death .
10 ) Sansa ’s loss of innocence
Another character who teach a harsh lesson in Game of Thrones is Ned ’s girl Sansa , who believe in her fairytale romance with Prince Joffrey , in spite of many signs that Joffrey is a dopy bully . It costs Sansa her wolf , Lady , early on on . But still , Sansa keeps believing in Joffrey long after she should know better — even after her own father is accused of being a traitor . It ’s heartbreaking how easily Cersei is able to flirt Sansa , over and over again . She restrain protesting her dearest for Joffrey and render to cling to the smidgeon of her wild-eyed dream , as they add up apart in her hands . It just makes things all the high-risk when Joffrey ultimately orders his men to beat her .
It ’s these niggling motifs in Martin ’s saga that make it such a exhaust read — and even though some outcome will inevitably have to be compressed and combined for idiot box , permit ’s go for these terrific gracenotes still come through .
